Sometimes the proportions of gum to teeth becomes imbalanced. This can be problematic as pleasant and healthy gums are essential for a radiant smile. After a thorough investigation, we work with you to determine how we can restore and improve pleasing proportions.
Excessive gums
When too much gum is visible when laughing or talking, we speak of a 'gummy smile'. To correct this, clinical crown extensions can help. This is a treatment in which the excess gum is removed and your own set of teeth that was not previously visible comes into its own.
Retracting gums
Exposed root surfaces are not only less attractive, they can also cause root sensitivity, and even lead to tooth loss. There are two possibilities to prevent or resolve these problems. The gums may be extended to cover the roots. A graft (piece of tissue) is transplanted from the roof of the mouth to cover the root. It is also possible to apply artificial gum covering. We will first need to investigate to determine the best method for you. The end result will eventually restore the lost tissue, leaving you talking or smiling, showing only your teeth.
